Project Overview

The project upgrades an existing community center, renovates the pool, and creates additional fitness and wellness amenities. The site will feature a shared use trail, fitness loop, a new Ripken artificial turf field, and a soccer field. Future phases will include a dog park and basketball courts.

MK is providing civil engineering and landscape architecture services on this task order under a BCRP Open-End. MK also prepared cost estimates at concept, schematic, and design milestones, and supported value engineering exercises throughout the project.

The 20-acre site was previously a Baltimore City incinerator facility. Waste from the incinerator site had been disposed of on site and created a layer of ash material that had to be tested and mitigated. MK worked with MDE in the early stages of the project to develop a plan to properly cap the contaminated soil with existing clean fill material available on site, which avoided costly haul-off to approved disposal areas.

The park is also located in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area. Our design was mindful of the limitations imposed by this designation and the additional permitting required. MK negotiated off-site tree mitigation, as necessary.
