The goddaughter and daughter-in-law of gospel
greats, Walter and Tramaine Hawkins, Sunny Hawkins has traveled the country
singing, acting, and most recently, producing, and songwriting. You may have
seen her as Joanne in Broadway's RENT (with NSYNC's Joey Fatone), and her rich
bell tone soprano has been featured on "Live with Regis and Kelly," and in
appearances on MTV, BET, and many major networks.
With a lyrical and soulful voice
that is often compared to Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and Beyoncé, it is only
natural that Sunny has been privileged to sing background for Chaka Khan,
Anastacia, Deborah Cox, the late Ray Charles, Tramaine Hawkins, Patti LaBelle,
Luther Vandross, and Liza Minelli among others. Her vocal skills have earned the
respect of artists from Darryl Coley, Donnie McClurkin, Patti LaBelle, and
Aretha Franklin to pop icon Justin Timberlake, |

She
is a regularly requested session singer, and recently wrote and sang background
vocals on "The Only Thing Missin," the first single on Aretha Franklin's album,
So Damn Happy (2003), and "Good Lovin," featured on Patti LaBelle's Timeless
Journey (2004). She is currently co-producing Tramaine Hawkins's next album, on
which you can expect to hear several compositions written by Sunny and her
husband Jamie.
Jamie Hawkins is the real deal. Though born the son of gospel legends, Walter
and Tramaine Hawkins, and the nephew of Edwin Hawkins - The Father of
Contemporary Gospel, Jamie has carved out a style all his own. Known around the
world for his beautiful melodies and full-bodied production, Jamie is the man
musicians listen to when they need inspiration. In 1999, he signed with Elektra
Records and recorded a self-titled album. The album was never released, but its
promotional sampler became an international cult classsic. With only 250,000
copies in circulation, it has commanded prices as high as $400 in online
auctions even 5 years after its release.
A longtime band director, Jamie has earned the respect of his peers, both young
and seasoned, in the music community. He has served as musical director of many
multi platinum acts including Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Boys II Men, and Lauryn
Hill. Jamie has shared the touring stage with Jill Scott, and was featured at
historic Carnegie Hall as the opening act for Gladys Knight. If you don't know
Jamie Hawkins, ask Destiny's Child, Carlos Santana, Glen Lewis, Amerie, Dwayne
Wiggins, or Next-- he's worked with all of them.
Writer and producer of Donnell Jones's 2002 hit "You Know That I Love You,"
Jamie's music is both gentle and driving, both sophisticated and simple. He is
the rare songwriter who composes the melody you've never heard before but feel
like you've known all your life. Stylistically, his range is uncanny - in
"Highest Praise" featured on Walter Hawkins's A Song In My Heart (2004), we hear
the haunting tranquility of a man who is obviously wise beyond his years; while
"Give It To Jesus" (from that same album) reminds us that Jamie is indeed a
genius of the hip-hop generation.
Currently touring and writing with Sunny, Jamie is an electrifying keyboardist.
Many virtuosos have touched the keys, but only a few make them speak. Jamie is
one of those few. He's funky, and he knows it - the kind of player that has you
moving in ways you never knew you could. He's tasteful - he doesn't play
anything for nothing - Jamie means every note he touches, and when he's
finished, you mean them too. Add that to Sunny Hawkins's emotional vocals and
confident, high energy presence onstage, and you have the combination of a
lifetime - they reflect a joy that's contagious, a love that comforts, and more
fun than most folks ever have in one night!
Affectionately known as "The Odd Couple," Sunny and Jamie's musical style is
both fresh and familiar. Their sound is best described as Christian soul/funk
with two twists of rock and hip-hop thrown in for taste. Imagine Floetry, Chaka,
Lauryn, and Aretha singing infectiously catchy songs about Jesus, and you have a
hint of what to expect from Sunny Hawkins. With their debut independent release,
More of You, the next generation of the legendary Hawkins family is here to
change the landscape of Christian music once again! |
